Tunes and IPod's

Ok, Ok now that we got Wild (or Mild)-I'm not sure which is right (teetoltalling not withstanding), now I feel that I can talk more about my obscession-collecting tunes. Of course, I continue to have other unhealthy habits in drinking and smoking. Anyway, I do plan to send you back your X-mas CD, Bill. I was wondering what else I might send you. It is one of my greatest joys to supply people with music. The nurse that I work with-her parents recently celebrated their 40th anniversary-she asked me for a list of songs they might like. She is Afro-american. I asked some things about them. She said they liked to dance, party and she had a pic of them with big Afros and showing peace signs. It turned out they were'nt really into the peace or equal rights movement of the 60's. I told her I would just burn somethings for her-she tried to give me a blank CD. I told her-NO, NO, NO-it will take many more than one. I burned her 10 CD's-all things I already had. Anyway, what are guys into? I'm thinking about a 70's mix, but so much of it sucked. Do you listen to any new music? Check out www.wknc.org the crazy college kids of NC State. Sorry, this is so disjointed. The boys want to use my sweet Mac for homework.

I've been collecting tunes from the WIU era. I try to snag stuff that was a bit more obscure. The rest of the stuff gets played non-stop on the local classic rock stations. Queebos...I'm going to start downloading some Rundgren one of these days.

I also like to grab up stuff from TV commercials. May favorite one of those is "Remind Me" by Royksopp used in the Geico Caveman ad. The one where the caveman is going through the airport. For a while, I was into British production music (stuff that you might hear playing in the background of an Austin Powers bachelor pad party), Italian movie soundtrack tunes, porn soundtrack stuff, etc. I have a pretty good sized selection of these kind of tunes. I usually judge the quality of tunes by how nuts it makes Sierra. Most of this stuff makes her leave the house!

I like to hunt around for new stuff, too. Some of the artists in my current playlist are: Band of Horses, Cat Power, OK Go, People on Planes, Teddybears Stockholm. Of course, hanging around with the kids everyday keeps me hip to the scene, man!

I still enjoy the stuff we were listening to at WIU and have actually come to appreciate the music of the 70's, although I don't listen to any of it much.

I've been getting into a lot of newer folk music and acoustic singer/songwriter stuff. Stuff from Johnsmith (local Wisconsin singer/songwriter), Berkely & Hart, Peter Mulvey, Shawn Colvin, Jack Williams, etc. In fact, if I had the money, I'd like to open a coffeehouse (adjacent to my hot dog stand)with live acoustic music.

How about-I am sure you know of-Ryan Adams: but what about Dresden Dolls, She Wants Revenge, Augustana, Death Cab For Cutie-you actually would like this band Lou, Gogol Bordola, Hank Williams III, Keane, Kings of Convenience, Metric, Morningwood, Under The Influence of Giants, White Stripes-Nick's (my 16 yo son's favourite band].

Mild Bill said...

Kenny...Have your kid check out the Black Keys and the Archie Bronson Outfit if he hasn't already. If you like the White Stripes you need to give these a listen.

I also was into alternative country for a long time. I don't download it much anymore, but I keep an ear out for it. Uncle Tupelo...which begat Wilco and Sonvolt are my faves, but there are a bunch of great bands out there playing the stuff.

Well, duty calls. My 1st hour is full of slackers, and I have to give them a bunch of shit today!

So, Bill, I recently sent queebs some tunes. So want do you want? Martini mix? Hank Williams III? Are you using the Itunes software? I could send you a data CD, with about 200 songs. Maybe a mix of things.

Mild Bill said...

Data CDs are best. I have quite a variety of stuff. The more obscure you get the better. You'd have to mention some of the artists you're thinking about sending, and I could narrow it down.

There was a brief conversation in the teacher's lounge today about how physical soccer could be. I was very tempted to tell the story of Queeb's back-to-back nut shots in intramural soccer! It still kills me when I think about it, especially since they called him for "hand balls." Come to think of it, he did have his hand on his "junk" all the time!!!

Lou Mindar said...

God, I was laughing so hard when I read Bill's post about Keith's "hand ball" that my eyes started watering. Kim and Shelby thought I was nuts. The story itself is funny, but when you add Keith into the mix, it's just priceless.

Ken -- If I give you the names of some singer/songwriters I like, can you make CDs of their music? I'm afraid I don't own an IPod or an MP3 player. I'm not even sure how they work. Can you get music from any artist?

KenJ said...

I guess I missed the soccer incident. The story is pretty funny, tho. For my computer-challenged friend-you don't need an IPOD to listen to mp3 audio files or have the Itunes software-you can listen to them on your computer. Or one could just burn audio CD's to play on any player. With a data disc you can get about 200 songs, an audio 20-25. Of course, after loading mp3's onto your computer-you could burn audio CD's from them-your children might be able to help with all of this. I think I have nearly every Shawn Colvin CD, and some other singer songwriters. I think I'll just surprise you guys-Wild Bill-if I send you something you have, or don't like-the CD is only about 10 cents. I do need to know if you have the Itunes software, or not-I can send data ebedded in the song file (mp4's) if you have Itunes (album artwork, composer, etc. it's kind of nice-tho not necessary). Or to send mp3's?

Lou Mindar said...

Ken -- I'm going to send you a list of people/groups I am interested in. If you can find stuff from any of them, I would greatly appreciate it. I think some of these people will be hard to find, but you seem like a resourceful guy to me.

I usually only listen to music in my truck any more, so CDs would probably be best.

If you need anything from me, just let me know.

Kenny,
I have the ITunes software, but I don't do the IPod yet. I have an old flash MP3 player, a MP3 CD player in the Jeep, and I listen to MP3s while on the 'puter. For now, I would think straight up MP3s would do the trick.

Anyway, we we're in a tight intramural soccer game, and Queebs got nailed in the goods with the ball. The ref called him for a hand ball. Queebs became outraged as soon as he could stand up. It couldn't have been more than a couple of minutes later, and he was nailed in the berries, AGAIN! Sure as shit, the ref blows the whistle and rings him up for another hand ball. Queebs lost his friggin' mind! He was screaming his ass off (sounding like he had inhaled a bunch of helium...for some strange reason), and we were all cracking up. Of course this pissed him off even more...leading to more "mickey mouse" screaming...leading to us cracking up even worse...leading to more screaming...a vicious cycle! About once a year this incident pops into my head, and it's good for a few giggles.

Bill -- Stop it. Just stop it. I'm laughing so hard I can't stand it. I was reading what you said about Keith's hand ball incident to Kim and I was laughing so hard it took me 10 minutes to read your post. My gosh that's funny.

Back in 1997 I had routine surgery on my sinuses that went terribly wrong. Without going into all of the gory details, one of the things that happened is that when I blow my nose hard now, the tear duct in my left eye shoots out water. My gosh, I'm like a carnival act.

Anyway, after reading your post, I found out that it also happens when I laugh really hard. I'm sitting here reading about Keith, my left eye is shooting water out, and I'm laughing like Muttly, that cartoon dog that has the weezy laugh.

Ahh, good times...

Ok, this is strange but I barely remeber anything to do with a handball in a soccer game... but all the same it is a pretty funny story. I do remember playing in the floor hockey league one winter. OK, on to the music thing, I am a bit all over the road when it comes to my musical tastes these days. One of my recent aquisitions was Jimmy Webb's "Ten easy Pieces" which I think is a classic. Are any of you guys into Coheed and Cambria at all? I have 2 of their CDs and I have really gotten into it lately. If you have never heard of them they have a series of CDs that sort of tell a story. I have also been listening to the the Roots lately, I am not really big on rap but "The Seed(2.0)" is a classic song. I know Kenny J does really care for him but I really like Ben Folds ( strange since he is from his neck of the woods ). A little more in the main stream I really like My Chemical Romance. Their last CD " Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" is on my top ten of all time and their new CD The Black Parade is great as well. They will no doubt be destroyed by commercial radio much like The Killers but if you listen to the entire CD it is really very good. So WFB, whe nyou say WIU era music that is a bit more obscure what are you refering to?? But anywho, take Kenny J up on his CD offer, he through togehter a kick ass 80's collection for me with a 3rd cd of some assorted stuff that was great as well. WFB, get started on that Rundgren downloading, I assume you heard he was out touring with the cars??

KenJ said...

Hey thanks el capitan, for the comment about the 80's tunes. Lou, you are just gonna hafta get in this century. I have 2 lists of musak for each of ya-just going thru what's on my Sweet Mac. Each are a data CD's worth-I would like for you to have some new music. Yo need to learn how to burn a CD-you can do it with Windows Media Player-not as easy as with Itunes, but. . . I got thru the L's on my Library.

Lou Mindar said...

I know how to burn a CD. What I'm not sure about is how the data CD works. Do you just download that onto the hard drive and then burn the audio CD?

The stuff I listen to is from this century. I think it's just a little more folky than what you guys are listening to.

KenJ said...

I meant regarding computers with the this century remark. I respect everyone's taste in music-there is so much good stuff out there. Yes, it is easy to but a data CD on the hard drive.

KenJ said...

sorry, put CD contents

Queebs,

Evidently the soccer incident has become a repressed memory. Hopefully, having it brought up won't awaken any repressed anal rape experiences!

I guess "obscure" isn't the right term. I tend to look for the "deeper" tracks of the stuff we were listening to.

OK WFB, now a lot of things in the basement of Murray street that I thought were just bad dreams are starting to come back to me. Come to think of it, now it seems odd that you used to go through a jar of Vaseline a week!! OK WFB, give an example of a few deep tracks???

Mild Bill said...

Instead of the typical stuff by popular bands played on the classic radio, a deep track may be... for example:

ACDC - The Jack
Eddie Money - Gimme Some Water
Queen - Death on Two Legs
Cheap Trick - Southern Girls
Graham Parker - I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down
The Cars - Candy-O
Van Morrison - T.B. Sheets

Then you could go with the rarely or never played stuff by the likes of:

Captain Beyond; Atomic Rooster; Wishbone Ash; Savoy Brown; Angel City; Flash and the Pan; The Dixie Dregs; etc.

At the moment, a couple of other new bands I'm really digging are The Shins and The Format.

Queebs, As I remember you always liked a little sand in the vasoline!

Gotcha WFB... as a matter of fact I have been listening to Graham Parker's "Squeezing Out Sparks" alblum a fair amount lately. That's right boys and girls, good old vinyl!! Mary bought me a new turntable for Christmas a few years back so I have been going through some of the old collection. Still think that is one of the top 25 on my all time favorite list.
