It's Gonna Snow

Howdy fellas. I hope all is going well for you. I thought I would share some random thoughts while I sit at home taking care of my sick son.

We are expecting 8-12" of snow this weekend. I went out this morning to make sure the snowblower would start. It wouldn't. I'm having a friend come over later this afternoon to see if he can get it started, but I'm not holding out much hope. I'm not even sure why I bother. I can get the drive plowed for $20, but having the snowblower running gives me the freedom to clear the drive whenever I want. I'm never sure when the plow is going to show up.

It's been awfully quiet on the blogfront the past couple of days. A little too quiet. What is going on with you guys? You need to post here at least once per day, and preferably several times per day. It's your obligation, your responsibility, your solemn duty. Let's not let each other down. And remember, in the end, it's for the children.

What's the deal with U of I getting rid of Chief Illiniwek? From things I've read, the Illini indians were either a)wiped out by the Fox, Saux, etc. indians so they don't even exist anymore (i.e. no one to insult), or b)they are a completely made up tribe of indians that were created by a student writer in the early 20th century (If that's true, I wonder what they were called before that. Hmmm...)

In any case, it just seems foolish to take political correctness so far. If no one from the Illini tribe is complaining (if there even is such a tribe), what harm is there in keeping Chief Illiniwek? Having the Chief (usually portrayed by a white kid) perform at sporting events has become a tradition. And it is meant as a show of respect and honor, not insult. I think it is a mistake to get rid of him.

That's all from me. Now start writing.

I knew you'd be worried, so I want to update you on my snowblower situation. My friend came over and started it up right away. This happened one other time. I tried and tried and tried, but couldn't start it. He came over and got it started on the second pull. That snowblower hates me.

My thoughts on the chief are very much the same. In my opinion I think of it as more of a sign of respect for the native Americans. They are brave, strong people so that is why they are a fitting mascot. If we are going to ge that pissy about the whole deal tell the Minnesota Vikings that they need to dump their mascot. I am Norwegien so what gives with the guy running around on the sidelines waving a sword and wearing a horned helmet?? I do think the Washington Redskins is a bit over the top.. if the Bears ever leave Chicago I think I will start the Chicago Whities... But anywho, I don't remember the rest of what Lou posted... all I can recall is something about a friend coming over to his house and blowing was involved somehow.. I guess it gets sort of cold up there in the North land

The weather psychics are now predicting 15 inches of snow this weekend. Ahhh...

Mr. Johnson, enough with the sexual innuendo (Actually, "Mr. Johnson" is a sexual innuendo, isn't it?). Snowblowing is a cherished tradition and a show of affection up here in the Great White North. But you make it sound so dirty. Pervert...

Snow Update #1

We've gotten about 4-5 inches of snow so far and all it's doing right now is blowing like crazy. It's not snowing.

Last night we had a snow thunder storm. It was pretty weird. It was thundering and lightening just like a regular thunder storm, but because of all of the snow in the air, the light from the lightening was magnified. It was really bright and really cool.

It's supposed to start snowing again any time now. I know this whole process is exciting for you, so I'll update the situation as conditions dictate.

Until them, from snow central, I'm Lou Mindar, the snow bunny.

Well that both sucks and blows about the snow. When we moved to Chapel Hill, the movers talked me into bringing a snow shovel. We've used it once, when the movers were woving our stuff into the house. After the truck was empty, it was stuck. They had me call the city and ask when things would be plowed. The woman asked if I lived on a cul-de-sac and I said yes. She said the snow would melt before the plow got to my street. If we have any winter precip.-it comes as ICE-which is good for sledding. You can do it right on the streets, since no one is driving. We were in the house without electricity for a week about 3 years ago. Anyway, just to rub it in further, it was 65 and sunny here today.

Snow Update #2

The weather psychics have updated their prediction. So far today, we have gotten very little additional snow, but the wind has been relentless. The snow is four feet deep in some places while you can see the bare ground in others.

We are supposed to have blizzard conditions tonight with an additional 5-8 inches of snow. The wind will continue blowing 25-35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Tomorrow, we're supposed to get an additional 3-5 inches of snow, but the wind should calm down by tomorrow night.

Stay tuned to this blog for further updates on the weather and to see if that stupid snowblower will start tommorow when I need it.

You white men speak with forked tongues! The Native American blood flowing through these viens is glad to see the Chief head to the happy hunting grounds of PC heaven. I was wondering how it would go over if a team from San Fran called themselves the Packers. Would gay men think it offensive? It could make for an interesting mascot! We are in the process of being buried in ice in good old Bourbonnais. Lou...What's all this shit about a snowblower? Got a shovel, PUSSY?

Mild Bill -- God, it's good to hear from you. How are you? Is everything good with you and Sierra?

I haven't spoken to you in several years and the first thing you do is call me a pussy. Nice... You're as classy as ever.

This isn't a brisk little Illinois winter. This is Wisconsin, where everyday in the winter is a matter of survival.

And just to be clear, I own THREE snow shovels. But the problem is that my daughter isn't big enough to shovel this much snow, so I need the snowblower so Kim can go out and clear the drive. I'm sure you understand.

Keep posting on here. It's great to hear from you.

Snow Update #3

The weather psychics have updated their prediction saying that we could receive as much as two feet of snow by tonight. I don't think we'll get that much, but 15-18 inches is reasonable.

We have a four foot drift of snow against the garage. The snow is up to the top of the fence in back.

I usually don't like to shovel or snowblow until the snow is done falling, but I think I'm going to have to get out there this afternoon and clear the drive. If I wait, there could be too much snow.

It will be a delicate operation and quite dangerous. I've known men who have perished trying to move far less snow. But this is the price that must be paid to live in "God's Country." Plus, if I don't clear a path today, they won't be able to get the medicine through to the sick children in time.

I'll write to update you later, if I am able. If I don't return, please tell my family I love them.

God speed, my friends. God speed.

Sure, Ken is the one writing about sucking and blowing and I am the pevert??? But anywho, it has been pretty nasty here for the last 24 hours or so. We have had a healthy dose of the Ice Mild Bill was refering to and now the snow is coming down hard. It doesn't sound nearly as bad as it is in Wisconsin, it sounds like we should get some sled dogs and try and head North to save the Mindar family.. Bill, pick me up on your way North. Native American Blood flowing through your veins WFB?? You are about as Native American as I am Italian!!!

Queebs -- You're Italian?

Snow Update #4

It continues to snow. We are supposed to get another five inches tonight.

I have both good news and bad news for you. The good news is that the snowblower started right up. The bad news is that that snow was so deep and packed that I couldn't get it from the shed up to the garage. I tried to shovel a path from the shed to drive, but after a half hour, I had barely made a dent. The snow was up to my upper thigh.

I finally gave up and called the snowplow guy. The children will have to wait for their medicine, but at least I don't have to break a sweat.
